Magazine Review: Lucky July 2010 - Milla Jovovich

Overall this issue was not that exciting. Although I did like that every item featured & on the models was less than $100. That definitely made me look closer at everything, since its more likely to be something I could afford.
The Under $25 Beauty section wasn't too great. How often do they have beauty items over $25 anyway? Plus, considering it was suppose to be a budget issue, they didn't have as many drugstore items as I would've liked.

New HG products!!

Not exactly sure why I felt the need to buy a bunch of new things (I guess my old standbys were failing me) but I've found quite a few new loves.

NYX eyeshadow in Black. Pencil eyeliners never really worked for me. Back when I first started wearing makeup I was using Bare Minerals loose black eyeliner but then moved on to cream liners (which I rarely got a perfect line with). But I kept finding myself using the black shadow in my Wet n Wild Platinum trio to do my liner on days when I didn't want to fuss with the cream. Eventually I decided to go back to using eyeshadow as a liner all the time. I got this one because of the great reviews but I wasn't expecting much. I mean, black e/s is black e/s, right? But this stuff is wonderful!! It's super pigmented & while it has a bit of fallout, its only during application & it stays put all day. I don't even need to wet my brush to apply. I absolutely love this & use it daily.

Vaseline Cocoa Butter lotion. This replaced my former HG, Suave Cocoa Butter & Shea lotion. The Suave just wasn't giving me enough moisture. On my way to this HG I tried the Aveeno Daily lotion but it felt like it never fully sunk into my skin (so I gave it to my BF who seems to really like it). But I love this Vaseline lotion. I've always been fond of the cocoa butter scent & this keeps me feeling soft. Even if I do a quick cooldown shower without using soap (its been 100 degrees recently), I don't need to remoisturize like I had to before. I still feel nice & soft.

Biore SkinPreservation Dual Fusion Moisturizer SPF 30. This replaced my Dove Deep Moisture, which I never really loved since it has shimmer in it (I prefer to control my glow by having matte-ish skin & using highlighter where desired). I also wanted a higher SPF than the normal 15 found in many moisturizers. I had originally tried to use asuper high SPF sunscreen on days when I knew I'd be outside a lot but that got annoying, espeially if my plans changed midday (but I still carry sunscreen in my bag just in case).
I absolutely LOVE this. It sinks in right away, leaves skin feeling soft & not at all tacky and hasn't caused any breakouts or dry flakiness (a problem I had before). The bottle is annoying but the product inside is worth the fuss.

Revlon Age Defying Spa Concealer. For some odd reason I had been putting off getting a new concealer for way too long. I seem to do that, often putting off rebuying necessities like concealer & mascara until the last possible moment but yet I buy lip products & eye shadow all the time. I used to use Maybelline Age Rewind (tube). It was always kind of sheer for me so I ended up layering it over foundation & then using a neutralizing powder on top. I occassionally tried other concealers, like the Maybelline Cover Stick (which, BTW, the lightest shade was WAY WAY too dark for me) but the Age Rewind was better than any other so I stuck with it until I finished my tube. For weeks now I've been squeezing the life out of it but finally gave in, checked reviews & went to the store. I was just going to get the Age Rewind Dual Perfector but decided to try the Revlon 1st. When I swatched in the car after buying I thought it might be a bit too dark but when I got home & tried it, it blended in very nicely. A few hours later I still looked well concealed & I like the matte finish (different from the Age Rewind). Very glad I got this. Hope everything continues to go well with it so I don't have to buy anything else. lol

Prestige Kohl eyeliner in White. Now normally I only use white eyeliner when I wearing a pink or purple eyeshadow to avoid the bunny rabbit eye look. But the one I had (some Victoria's Secret thing I got for free) didn't work well on the waterline. So I decided to browse a bit at the drugstore. At first I picked up the Wet n Wild white pencil but put it back when I saw the Prestige. I hadn't tried Prestige eyeliners before (since I tend to use black eyeshadow as a liner) & since I've heard such good things decided to get their version. I'm *so* glad I did!! It works extremely well on the waterline, I almost need to blot it to tone it down a bit. I applied midday but when I washed my face at night it was still going strong. NOTE: About white eyeliner, unless you're super pale like me, it might be better to use a nude toned liner instead of white, since on many people white can be too OTT noticeable.

Revlon Super Lustrous lipgloss in Pink Afterglow & Pink Pop. I recently did a stash purge & when it was over I had gotten rid of many of my lipglosses but none of my Super Lustrous glosses. I now have 7 (Cherries in the Glow, Glossy Rose, Nude Lustre, Coral Reef, Peach Petal, Pink Pop & Pink Afterglow) & they've taken over my lipgloss stash in the same way Maybeline Color Sensational took over my lipstick stash. I love how they aren't overly sticky, with no real smell & last quite awhile. The Pink Pop I picked up after realizing that I didn't have a bright pink lipgloss & the Pink Afterglow, simply because I wanted another SL gloss & because it had so many great reviews. lol. I love both shades. Pink Afterglow is a great summer everyday kind of shade (Glossy Rose is my everyday gloss for fall/winter) but quite sparkly so I have to finger blot it after applying to tone it down a notch.

Bare Minerals eyeshadow in Nude Beach. This is a stash rediscovery. I bought this many, many years ago & back then it was my everyday shade. But then I moved on to more complex things & this got forgotten. But now I'm back to using this quite frequently. It's a great shimmery nude shade that's great for when I want to have my lips or blush be the focus rather than my eyes but yet this still adds wonderful sparkle so that I still look polished.

A Day in the Life: Food

I need to start by saying that I absolutely cannot skip meals. I get shaky, dizzy, weak & mean if I don't eat something every few hours. So its only natural that I snack a lot. I've recently replaced my lunch with a snack so now I eat breakfast, 3 snacks & then dinner. I do not like to deprive myself & while I'm not at all picky, I will not eat anything I don't like. I do try to control portions whenever possible, including sectioning out large bags of things into smaller baggies so that I don't overeat. I am a bit addicted to sugar so I've worked it out so that I can have my sugar fix without going crazy.

7-8am: Kashi GoLean Crunch cereal. 1 cup measured out w/a handful of thawed blueberries. Hot water w/lemon.

10am, noon & 3pm: Various snacks. Here are some examples:
2 Wasa crackers spread w/1 Laughing Cow cheese, sometimes topped w/tomatoes
& lunchmeat (also scooped out bagel can sub for crackers)
Apple & slice of cheese
Baggie of Planters Nut Clusters
Celery w/ either PB or cream cheese
Carrots dipped in hummus
1 hard pretzel
3 cups air-popped popcorn (made w/a bit of butter, salt & cheese powder)
Rice cakes
Cottage cheese w/fruit
Greek yogurt

3-4pm: 1 cups of Nescafe Classico made w/1% milk & a piece of chocolate (usually 1 square of a good quality dark chocolate)

6pm: Dinner. Can be any number of different things & I'm not strict about portion control for this meal. Some examples:
Stromboli (recipe posted in blog)
Various salads
Steak, potatoes & a veggie
Chicken sandwiches & french fries
Tuna sandwich & french fries
Smoked salmon on french bread w/cream cheese, tomato & spinach
BLTs (with turkey bacon & spinach)
Pizza from Papa Murphy's (always thin crust, my favorite is the Chicken Bacon
Artichoke)
Pasta (many different varieties, trying to switch to whole grain pasta)
Black Bean Soup
Etc... We don't eat a lot of prepared foods but I'm also not hardcore about making everything from scratch either. Some prepared fods we like are the Birds Eye frozen bag meals (Garlic Chicken) & various things from Trader Joes like the Butter Chicken & the Spinach Quiche (very high in calories but a super yummy occassional treat).

8pm: Dessert of some kind. Recently either a Dreyers Fruit Bar or Skinny Cow ice cream bar

NOTE: I usually only drink water w/lemon throughout the day, except for my daily coffee. On a very rare occassion I'll have a glass of homemade sweet tea. Rarely ever drink soda although if I get a craving I have no problem drinking one.

Magazine Review: Marie Claire July 2010 - Taylor Swift

I first read through this when it was 100 degrees outside & about 85 inside. The last thing I wanted to think about was heavy clothes so I skipped the fashion sections in favor of the beauty & articles. I know why magazines talk about fall so early, since the fall designer runway collections came out awhile ago but in this heat I imagine the reader who wants to think about boots & camel coats might be few & far between.
Starting with the Beauty articles, they have an article on The Pure Cure (things like acupuncture, charcoal therapy, ayurveda, etc), Full Spectrum (summer trends for your skintone), Master Class: The Blowout & Slimming with Self-Tanner.
The most interesting article to me was the one by Lori Gottlieb (author of Marry Him) about female friends & how they can be fake & possibly harmful. Other noteable articles were The Savy Girl's Guide to Contraception & How to Throw a Party in the Great Outdoors (5 pgs of tips). In the Love/Sex section the topics included what cities have more single men, japanese women who pay escorts to hit on their husbands so they getting bigger divorce settlements & a girl who gave up sex for a year. Also a mention of YouTube vloggers.
When I finally cooled off enough to look at the fashion pages, there were some decent mentions. Instant Classic: Plaid, Fashion Resume: Erin Wasson, American Standards (the new classics, which include camel coats, leather skirts & riding pants), Dress Code (real women & their wardrobe secrets), Designer Dossier: Patrick Robinson, an article about Project Runway winner Seth Aaron & the Big Girl/Skinny World column was about dressing for the wedding season. Also in the fashion photo spreads I noticed a gorgeous black model, Fatima Siad, apparently a former ANTM contestant.

NOTE: I wrote a full page of notes on this issue, which I haven't done in awhile. Think it might be worth getting.

Books: The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
"In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do. He manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan--while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. And he does this on his first try.

The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. ("...I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.")

Some of the plot's turns and twists may be somewhat implausible, but Hosseini has created characters that seem so real that one almost forgets that The Kite Runner is a novel and not a memoir. At a time when Afghanistan has been thrust into the forefront of America's collective consciousness ("people sipping lattes at Starbucks were talking about the battle for Kunduz"), Hosseini offers an honest, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, but always heartfelt view of a fascinating land. Perhaps the only true flaw in this extraordinary novel is that it ends all too soon. --Gisele Toueg --" taken from Amazon.com

Very good book. Much faster read than I thought it would be. But really sad & disturbing.

Magazine Review: Harper's Bazaar June/July 2010 - Katherine Heigl

What stood out most about this issue was all of the ladylike fall fashion. Things like cat-eye sunglasses, kitten heels & structured skin bags. Felt quite inspiring. Even the celebrity photoshoots had a very demure, ladylike feel. For other fashion articles, they had SUmming up the (fall) Season, the Runway Report (lots of camel/gray, the new bohemian, opulence, 90s minimalism, cozy chic, the great outdoors, etc) & Roberto Cavalli's Fashion Circus.
In Beauty, the only noteable thing was (Fall's) Best Beauty, Guide to the Season's Makeup, Hair & Skin. Looks included groomed brows, chic polish (greige - still!) & touseled locks.
For Articles, there was Gloria Allred's Fighting Spirit (lawyer who represents the women involved in the Tiger Woods, Jesse James scandals & an article on Bristol Palin (when I saw that I almost threw the magazine out right then. Bazaar does seem to like to feature controversial people - thinking of the Miley & Paris and Nicole covers).

Overall, quite inspiring if you want to think about fall already.
