Food: Lemon Jello Cake

This is one of my *favorite* cakes. I first heard about it on Pinch My Salt (which is where the pic is taken from) http://pinchmysalt.com/2007/09/14/quick-and-easy-lemon-cake/

The only change I made from her recipe (which has some cute pics to go along w/the instructions) is to use a lemon box cake mix instead of a yellow one. I was never a lemon cake fan before trying this cake but now I'm truly addicted.

NOTE: You will have to make adjustments if you live in a high altitude.

1 package lemon cake mix
1 small package lemon jello
3/4 C. water
4 eggs, well beaten
3/4 C. oil

glaze:
Juice and zest of 2 lemons
2 C. powdered sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350. Butter and flour a 18 x 13-inch jelly roll pan (I use 2 8x8" pans)

2. Pour cake mix and lemon jello powder into a large bowl; mix. Stir in the water then add eggs and oil. Mix using a wooden spoon. Lumps ok

3. Pour batter into a greased and floured pan; smooth batter with a spatula so that it is even. Bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees, checking after the first 20 minutes.

4. While cake is baking, mix together powdered sugar, lemon juice and zest.

5. While cake is still warm, pierce with fork all over then spread glaze evenly over the top. Allow to cool, then cut into squares and serve.

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

Magazine Review: InStyle May 2010 - Scarlett Johansson

The standout of this issue were the Best Beauty Buys. Overall, their picks seemed like popular products and products that have pretty good overall ratings on review forums. There wasn't really anything new & exciting but I don't think that was the goal of the article anyway. They did have Great Lash listed but they also had Voluminous & DiorShow on there too. Pantene was one fo the hair products recommended but it was the Nature Fusion line which is one of the better ones (without the buildup that I get from other Pantene products). I'm pretty much a drugstore-only kind of girl & I wrote down several things to check out.
The rest of the issue wasn't too exciting. Her 10 Best Ever! was on Gwyneth Paltrow, they did a rundown on the popular Oscar looks, there were a few pages of Cat Deeley & her fave outfits (*love* her). One big downside was Scar Jo on the cover. I can't *stand* her & I'm pissed that she's in Iron Man2 & isn't even a character that would be killed off. lol
Get this issue for the beauty buys list!!

Magazine Review: Elle May 2010 - Fergie

To be honest, this issue was a bit of a letdown. Maybe because it was the Green Stars (eco-smart beauty) & Gold Awards issue (eco-innovators). Now don't get me wrong. I'm very pro-Earth, I try to do my part & I was raised in a home where we had diesel vehicles that had been converted to run on used vegetable oil. But all of these special sections w/eco-products are kind of annoying. Why do they have to make such a big deal about it? In the beauty recs, why can't they just include the eco products alongside their other product recs? And the same goes for fashion. It's like they think that the eco-products couldn't "compete" with the non-eco. And as far as the innovators go, I read Popular Science so anything in a fashion magazine is going to seem kinda petty compared to that (but it's great that so many people are working towards "saving the Earth"). Sorry, didn't mean to rant. Onto what was in this issue...
As far as Beauty, nothing really stoof out in the Green Stars section. The article Gold Standard was about "how to glow from head-to-toe" but there wasn't any new info in it. A few articles were about the psychology behind plastic surgery.
For Fashion, the Style A to Zee column was about how to edit your closet, beauty routine and makeup. I found a few cute pieces in this issue, namely some straw clutches, "country" wedges, etc but holy 90s revivial! Calico, a-line denim skirts, jean jackets. Doesn't sound too bad when I'm writing it out but once you see the pics you'll know what I mean.
In the Articles, they had an interview w/Sarah Silverman because of her new memoir The Bedwetter?. The article Everything is Illuminated, about how you & your friends influence each other, was quite interesting.
This is a magazine I normally enjoy but I just wasn't impressed this month.

Magazine Review: Women's Health May 2010 - Jillian MIchaels

This is one of my favorite magazines but it felt a little lacking this month. Still worth getting but not as great as usual.
Fitness - They have a martial-art style workout, the 15 Minute Workout is for flat abs w/no crunches, how to create your own "bootcamp" workout and How to Look Better Naked (stole the idea from Allure this month?) which includes workout "rules" & tear out exercises. They also had slimdown success stories complete w/tips from each of the women featured.
Food - they had 2 pages of common spices & their tastes, benefits & how to use them. Vegetables, fresh vs frozen, fast homemade appetizers, gourmet-looking sandwiches, simple 3 ingredient desserts.
Articles - Can You Really Be Healthy at Any Size? and How to do One Thing at a Time (how multi-tasking isn't really doing us any favors)

Magazine Review: Self May 2010 - Zoe Saldana

Just realized that my subscription ran out back in March & I haven't been reviewing this. Guess that's what happens when you get so many magazines. lol
This is a very good issue. Lets tackle each section:
Beauty - This has the 2010 Healthy Beauty Awards. The are much more in-depth than most beauty awards, getting into skin-type, hair-type, etc for every category. There is also an article about make-at-home beauty fixes/recipes. And of course the requisite suncare article, this one even includes diet adjustments to make to protect yourself from the inside-out.
Fashion - They have 2 pages of swimsuits, categorized by trend w/note on body-type, price, where to buy, if you can mix & match and if available by cup size. In the article about Zoe Saldana, she models several very cute floral dresses.
Workouts - This is month 3 of the Self Challenge, which comes w/the normal workout tips, pull-out cards, weekly diet, etc. They also have a workout designed to target cellulite, including diet changes to makes & superficial fixes.
Food - short mentions on chip alternatives & flavor boosters to try (sriracha, flavored balsamic vinegar, etc).
Articles - Secrets of Women at Their Sexual Peak & Self's Get Happier Guide (which also mentions therapy, etc).

NOTE: In this issue I also heard about Discovery Health's Psych Week starting May 2nd.

Very good issue. I would recommend buying it

Magazine Review: Allure May 2010 - Catherine Zeta-Jones

I made more notes on this issue than I have for any other magazine since I started doing reviews. Which is a very good thing.
In the Beauty Reporter sections they had a (positive) review of the Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Foam shampoo, promoting the trends of white eyeliner, teal eyeshadow & liner, highlighter & taupe nails (taupe nails have been talked about for months now. Have a feeling they'll be around for awhile). The Beauty 101 was on Shiny Hair, nothing ground-breaking. They had 2 pages on Shear Genius Brig's win (I was NOT happy about that).
As for their longer articles, there was the spring/summer mandatory sunscreen article but at least this one was a little more interesting, talking about SPF 30 vs SPF 100, how to layer w/other products & application spots commonly overlooked. They had the top 5 trends for fall in Backstage Beauty, but none felt very new or exciting. Shock Value is a pictorial about bright lipcolors, created a few lemmings for me but the photography could've been better. They also had an article about hot rollers & different ways to use them, which I will note is something that I don't think I've read in any magazine before (that I remember at least).
This is the annual "naked" issue. TBH, the nakedness is over-hyped. Too much strategic posing, most of the time covering more than a bikini. Emmanuelle Chriqui is the only one who really seemed naked (& she looked great). Oh course this was accompanied by 22 Ways to Look Better Naked which didn't have any new or interesting tips.
As far as articles, the only standout was Beauty Behind Bars. There was also a mention of Molly Ringwald's new bio, Getting the Pretty Back: Friendship, Family & Finding the Perfect Lipstick.
One thing I also noticed about this issue was that not all of the reviews were positive. As an example, about half of the hot rollers mentioned in Heat Wave were dissed.

I know I had some negative opinions about this issue but I still think it's worth getting.

Books: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.
"Once you start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there's no turning back. This debut thriller--the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson--is a serious page-turner rivaling the best of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo. --Dave Callanan" taken from Amazon.com

I feel like this book is a bit over-hyped. For one thing, it starts out *really* slow. It doesn't get interesting until150 pages in and the part about them working together doesn't happen until around 260. It's a good book but you could've cut out about 50-75 pgs and they wouldn't have been missed

Magazine Review: Cosmo May 2010 - Heidi Klum

Not quite sure why Heidi Klum is on so many magazine covers recently. Doesn't seem like she's promoting anything in particular.
Not much by way of fashion in this issue. They do have a swimsuit section with suits by price range (even under $25 options).
For beauty, their Beauty Cheat Sheet is on Giving Roots a Mega Boost (blow-drying techniques), hairstyles that draw attention to your best features (eyes, cleavage, etc), The Power of Red Lips, which has a few options in each tone category (like orange-red, pink-red, etc). One odd article seemed to be anti-freckle. As someone with lots of freckles I thought they were accepted now but apparently there are lots of people looking for ways to cover them up.
And in typical Cosmo fashion, they have bikini line stencils. lol
Overall, nothing really stood out about the issue. Unless one of the things I mentioned above really interests you, I'd skip it.

NOTE: On Sunday the 18th, Hilary Duff will be starring in a ABC Family Original Movie called Beauty & the Briefcase, which I believe is inspired by or based on. working in the Cosmo offices.

Basic makeup

This is the makeup I use as the base for almost every look. I can narrow it down by using the Colorstay as a spot concealer & under eyes, e/l & mascara and done. But if I have more than a minute this is what I use.
Start out by applying Maybelline Pure all over, then using Colorstay around nose & eyes. Then use Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer under eyes, setting w/Revlon Matte in Peach Sorbet. I contour/bronze my fave w/Rimmel Natural in Sunlight, applying under cheekbones, around temples, down face & around frame of face. Then use a skunk brush to apply Hard Candy bronzer in Tiki (it's so light I use as a highlighter in the summer months) to top of cheekbones & on browbone. Milani Luminous on apples of cheeks. Wet n Wild cream e/l along top lashline (sometimes use a black e/s wet as a liner for a more casual look). Curl lashes. Mascara. Fill in brows w/the dark brown matte e/s in the Maybelline Natural Smokes quad (very light hand).

I usually just vary the eyeshadow & lipcolors. If I'm doing a bright lip I skip the blush. Sometimes I change the blush if I'm doing a warmer eye (then I use L'Oreal HIP cream blush in Enamoured) or if I'm doing a pinker look I'll use a pink blush (Wet n Wild Heather Silk, Wet n Wild Coy) or sometimes I'll make the blush the focal point (Tarte Cloud Nine or Stila CC in Petunia).

Books: Where the Girls Are

Where the Girls Are: Growing up Female with the Mass Media by Susan J Douglas. This book is a great overview of the most critical years in the development of feminism. The author talks about how media encouraged change but also tried to influence attitudes & opinions with the tv shows and movies that they produced.
Very enlightening & a must-read.

Magazine Review: Marie Claire May 2010 - Jessica Simpson

This issue has been talked about a bit because they are claiming Jessica is makeup-free. One reason I have trouble believing that is the lack of under-eye darkness. Are there actually people who don't need concealer?
As far as the fashion in the issue, there aren't tons of great articles but a few interesting pages here & there. The Fashion Resume is on Carey Mulligan. I had a feeling she was going to get attention from the fashion world since she tends to wear more unique clothes/outfits. The Designer Dossier is on Philip Lim. They had a page of street style and since that's so popular in other mags & blogs I'm wondering if it will be a new monthly feature. They did have quite a few cute swimsuits in the issue but since I have zero intention of getting into one anytime soon it doesn't help me much. lol. They have a *gorgeous* Vanessa Paradis/Chanel photo shoot. Great clothes, very artistic.
The seemed to be The Hair Issue. They had tool and product recs for each hair type (fine, medium/thick, curly, coarse, damaged), how to wear hair accessories and how to choose a haircolor to suit your complexion. In the Big Girl, Skinny World column she talks about slimming hair and makeup. One thing I noticed was not much emphases on contouring, which in my opinion, makes a *huge* difference.
The only article that stood out was an interview with Jillian Lauren who is promoting her new book Some Girls: My Life in a Harem.
Overall, its worth picking up but its not a must-buy this month.

Early b-day present

My boyfriend knew I had been wanting a watch for awhile & he gave this to me as an early b-day present. Mine is slightly different. The background is kind of mother-of-pearl looking & there are no gold tones. I absolutely love it

Clothing Haul - Walmart, Target, Old Navy

Got this at Walmart. Saw something similar in the Nordstrom catalog & that's what inspired me to get it in lime green.

Got more of these basic tanks. Love how long they are & low enough to be sexy.

Found this white jacket w/a bunch of cropped moto jackets. The brand is New Look, which I don't think I've ever seen at Target before. I thought it was super cute & had to get it. MUCH cuter in person.
I've decided that my "uniform" this summer will be tanks & skirts. Since Old Navy's foldy skirts are so comfy I got a few more.

Magazine Review: Glamour May 2010 - Lauren Conrad

The 1st time I read through this issue I didn't make any notes & the only page I dog-earred was about a DIY ribbon flower belt. Nothing really stood out. So I read it through again and this time was able to make a few notes. For one, this seems to be the "friendship" issue. Doesn't say so on the cover but it was a reoccurring theme. They had some short blubs on Betty White & Queen Latifah. As far as the 2 cover stories on fitness & diet, A Flatter Belly in Days, Not Weeks and The Lazy Girl's Guide to Healthier Eating, neither was what I was expecting. The Flatter Belly article didn't have any exercises, just tips like "drink more water", "cut back on artificial sweetners" and "stand up straight". The Healthy Eating article was just summarizing what appeared to be a reader survey about what they normally buy at the store. Things like Yoplait yogurt, Quaker Instant Oatmeal & Edy's Slow-Churned Ice Cream. Nothing new or ground-breaking. I've seen this kind of article done much better in other magazines. As far as beauty & fashion go, the photo shoots were pretty but no new tips or great pieces featured.
Overall, it was fine. A short distraction w/pretty pictures but nothing more than filler fluff. Nothing new or really worth referrencing later.

Stash: Scarves

This is my scarf collection. I have so many I really should wear them daily but I don't. During the winter I'm usually wearing a pashmina (surprised I don't have them in more colors). During the summer, I either wear a scarf around my wrist, loosely around my neck, as a headband, some as a belt or on the handle of my bag. Most of these I got a long time ago or they were thrift store finds.
The only one bought recently or not at a thrift store is the rainbow zebra print which I bought a few weeks ago at Target

All vintage

All except the middle 2 are from Target

Stash: Necklaces

I don't accessorize nearly as much as I should but when I do its usually w/big necklaces or a scarf. I edit frequently so these are all things I wear all the time or that I just can't part with.

Top row, L-R: Burlington, Walmart, vintage (DD broke it so I have a makeshift ribbon on it now. I need to restring), Walmart, Walmart
Bottom row, L-R: vintage, alltherageonline, vintage

L-R: not sure, vintage, Walmart, Walmart, not sure

Can't quite tell from the pic but this has an awesome green flash.

Books: Twenties Girls, Chasing Harry Winston

Finally, a good chick lit book!!! This novel is about a girl who's life is essentially falling apart. Her business partner had walked out on her and her boyfriend just dumped her (and accused her of stalking him). Her parents make her go to her great-aunt Sadie's funeral, a woman that she's never met and someone her parents didn't know well either. While at the funeral Lara sees her great-aunt's ghost, going on & on about her missing necklace. This is where the fun starts. Sadie nags Lara into doing a bunch of gasp-worthy things and while the ghost is an annoying burden in the beginning, Lara comes to have life much enriched by Sadie's attitude & antics. This is a mystery & there is a great twist. There is a happy, but not necessarily chick-lit-typical ending. Overall, a *great* book. I read the whole book (all 435 pages) in one day. I just couldn't put it down.

This was such a disappointment, not just in story but in editing as well. I only made it about halfway through. We have the typical chick lit characters, Emmy, the recently dumped serial monogamist, Leigh, who appears to have it all but is secretly unhappy and Adriana, the shallow beauty who is unable to handle not being the center of attention. But the worst part of the book, the part that made my throw it down is disgust, was something that should never have made it into the final printed edition. A little less than halfway through, the girls are on vacation together, meeting guys, etc. And then, in the middle of the damn chapter, Leigh is back at work waiting for client. Without warning the vacation was over & life was back to normal. I actually paged back and forth a bit to see if the pages had gotten mixed up but no. Complete and total subject change in the middle of a chapter, something that you would've gotten in trouble for doing in a grade school English paper. After that, I didn't even want to read any farther.

TV: Shows I normally watch

How did anyone watch tv before they invented DVRs? lol. Here is my current weekly DVR lineup:

Sunday:
->used to watch Til Death (canceled now) but had been getting annoyed at the random order in which they played episodes & the 3 different Allies. I liked the Doug-thinking-he-was-on-a-sitcom thing though
Simpsons
Family Guy
The Cleveland Show (BF's. I don't find it funny)
American Dad (before it was replaced by Sons of Tucson. Tried watching SoT but didn't think it was all that great)
Desperate Housewives (had watched this when it 1st started, then stopped, then last summer got caught up w/Lifetime reruns & started watching again)
Breaking Bad (another show I got hooked on via reruns/marathons)

Monday:
How I Met Your Mother (Lifetime also reruns earlier seasons on either Sat or Sun nights around 11pm)
Rules of Engagement (*love* Patrick Warburton)
The Big Bang Theory
Castle
-> used to watch Gossip Girl but it really got boring this season

Tuesday:
Lost
Melrose Place
The Good Wife
V
Parenthood
->have been recording Justified but haven't watched any episodes yet

Wednesday:
Human Target
The New Adventures of Old Christine
Gary Unmarried
Modern Family
Cougar Town
Shear Genius
Top Chef Masters

Thursday:
Bones
Vampire Diaries
->used to watch FlashForward but VD & Bones won the DVR war. Do wish they reran one of them so I could watch Community though)
Fringe
30 Rock
Private Practice
The Mentalist
The Real Housewives of NYC
Project Runway (although I pretty much just fast forward to the end to watch the runway show)

Friday:
Smallville
Merlin (on SyFy)

Food: Oatmeal Peanut Butter Cookies

These are one of my boyfriend's favorite cookies. Most of the time I don't bother to make them into sandwich-style cookies. Really yummy either way.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup quick cooking oats
Filling:
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup butter or margarine, 1/2 cup peanut butter, white sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla. Add egg and beat well.
  2. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add these dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Stir. Add oatmeal and stir.
  3. Drop by teaspoons onto greased baking sheet, and press each mound down with a fork to form 1/4 inch thick cookies. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 10 minutes, or until cookies are a light brown. They are PB cookies, so make sure to not overbake.
  4. To Make Filling: Cream 3 tablespoons butter or margarine with the confectioners' sugar, 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter, and the cream. Spread filling onto half of the cooled cookies, then top with the other half to form sandwiches.

Books: Cocktails for Three, A Life's Work

This book is... fine. It didn't thrill me, but I didn't give up on it either. Maggie, Roxanne and Candice are three successful women in their early 30s working for the Londoner, a popular magazine in the UK. This book did inspire some emotional reactions from me, mainly annoyance towards Candice for being so naive and trusting, and sympathy for Maggie, a new mother having a rough time but afraid to admit it and be seen as a failure. But the story didn't feel new at all and it definitely wasn't something I was unable to put down. It was just ok.

This book is more honest than most, which I personally think is a good thing. A lot of mothers hide their true feelings and experiences because its not socially acceptable to admit to missing your old life or to say that you aren't sure how to correctly care for your child. Cusk calls out the people imposing the crazy restrictions on pregnant women and the breast-feeding nazis who do nothing but make you feel like a failure. This is a good book but only if you are already a mother & your child is a few years old. I am a mother but my baby was quite good (didn't wake up constantly for feedings, slept through the night early on, no colic) so my experiences differed a bit from the authors. About halfway through I started to doubt my desire to have a second child, in case I wouldn't be so lucky to have another good baby, and since I'm 8 month pregnant, its not exactly a great feeling to be having. I stopped reading it but will probably pick it up again after this baby is out & at least a few months old.

Magazine Review: Lucky May 2010 - Hilary Duff

Not too much as far as fashion. Two beauty articles stood out, The Lucky Hair Guide, which had an interesting way to add waves to your hair, and How to Conceal Anything, which has random tips from readers & experts & lots of product recs.
The most I got out of this magazine was random info.
~ Julia Roberts is the new beauty ambassador for Lancome
~ Cynthia Vincent is making a shoe line for Target, out April 18th. Visit Nitrolicious (http://www.nitrolicious.com/blog/) for pics of this line & of the Eugenia Kim hat line.
~ Hilary Duff is starring in the remake of Bonnie & Clyde. Also starring in Beauty & the Briefcase, airing on ABC Family in a few weeks.
~ Eva Longoria has her own perfume now, called Eva.

Recent purchases: Target!

I shop at Target quite a bit. Here are some recent purchases:

Guess I'll just pair this with tees & jeans & use it as a light jacket when I need it.

I LOVE this tee. I buy mine a bit bigger so its a looser fit than on the model. I also have this in olive green & gray.

Don't love this tee but I needed more casual summer tops.

I prefer the Old Navy tank tops (which I already had in white & gray) but I needed a few more so I picked these up.
Tend to be afraid of prints but this was a really cute top so I decided to go for it. I liked some of the Liberty of London dresses too but I won't be able to fit into them this year.
I *love* this scarf. SO cute, light & summery. I also got a gorgeous blue/purple/lavender floral scarf but I can't find any pics of it online
